While sitting down and getting your work done should never hinge on inspiration, every now and then we all need a little entrepreneurial kick in the pants. That’s why I’ve put together my top five flicks to get your fire going. If you’re looking to reorient your motivation, look no further, babe. The characters in these movies are brimming with the kind of no-quit gumption we all want coursing through our veins. So without further ado, here are the Five Flicks to Light Your Entrepreneurial Fire.
Ok, so this one isn’t exactly a movie, but if you’ve got an afternoon to burn and a love for a good RuPaul cameo, this original Netflix show is for you. The true story of Nasty Gal queen Sofia Amoruso, (and by queen I mean she was worth a self-made $280 mill), this memoir will ring with a gritty familiarity for any entrepreneur.
Bonus: Read the book for an extra shot of ass-kicking, boss-babe spirit.
Hands down Julia Roberts’ best role (sorry Pretty Woman, but gag me with a spoon), Erin Brockovich is the true story of a one-woman powerhouse that was built from nothing and took on a Fortune 500 company in a massive legal case. I won’t tell you too much because this one is a must see, but I will say you’ll walk away with a breakdown of exactly how to kick some ass and take names.
#NoShame for this choice. I love every single thing about it—from Tom’s scrappy business owner spirit, to Cuba Gooding’s blind ambition and sheer determination. And you can scoff all you want from your couch during the “you complete me” scene, but you and I both know there’s goose bumps on them legs tucked under the covers.
This star-studded flick is no walk in the park. While highly entertaining, it’s a serious reminder that some things (cough cough *your morals* cough) aren’t worth sacrificing in the hunt for success. It’ll also make you question whether you’ve gotten comfortable and are resting on your pretty little laurels. After all, coffee, my dear, is for closers.
This one will have you standing on your couch, pumping fists full of tissues and yelling that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE through a river of ugly-cry tears. Another true story, one man’s relentlessness to succeed for the sake of his family will have you celebrating the human spirit in all it’s gritty resilience. And Lord knows we business owners need as much of that good stuff as we can get our scrappy little hands on.
At the end of the day, there’s no real substitute for sitting down and doing the hard work. It’s what sets the professional and the amateur apart. But, a little motivation can certainly make the sitting down a whole lot easier.
